What Is Reiki?
Reiki is a complementary wellness practice that promotes deep relaxation and supports the body’s natural capacity for self-regulation and recovery.
Developed in Japan in the early 20th century, Reiki is based on gentle, non-invasive touch or near-body hand placements. It is commonly used alongside conventional healthcare to support physical comfort, emotional balance, and stress reduction.
Reiki is considered a complementary therapy, not a medical treatment, and does not involve diagnosis or medical intervention.

How Reiki Works From a Physiological Perspective
Although Reiki is often described in energetic terms, its effects can be understood through well-studied physiological mechanisms related to relaxation and nervous system regulation.
Research suggests that Reiki may:
• Activate the parasympathetic nervous system, responsible for rest, recovery, and digestion
• Reduce markers associated with stress and sympathetic nervous system activation
• Support heart rate variability, a key indicator of nervous system balance
• Encourage a relaxation response similar to that observed in meditation and mindfulness practices
By helping the body shift out of a chronic stress state, Reiki creates conditions in which natural healing processes can function more effectively.

What Happens During a Reiki Session?
During a session, the client remains fully clothed and lies comfortably or sits in a relaxed position. The practitioner places their hands lightly on or just above specific areas of the body in a structured sequence.
A session typically lasts 45–60 minutes and takes place in a calm, quiet environment. Many clients experience:
• Deep physical relaxation
• Slower breathing and heart rate
• Reduced muscle tension
• A feeling of mental quiet or emotional release
Responses vary between individuals and sessions, and some effects may be subtle yet cumulative over time.

Safety and Suitability
Reiki is:
• Non-invasive
• Gentle and low-risk
• Suitable for all ages
It does not interfere with medical treatments and can be safely integrated alongside conventional care. Reiki practitioners do not diagnose conditions or alter medical plans.
